See a preview of Celia Birtwell’s upcoming range for Uniqlo with an exclusive film, which goes behind the scenes on the making of the collection lookbook. See vogue.co.uk contributor and model Portia Freeman bring the colourful printed creations to life, as the designer herself talks us through the range.
“I always use paint, paper and a brush and I believe that when you’re designing it should come from the hand, eye and heart,” said Birtwell. “I’m often asked where one takes one’s inspiration from, so obviously nature and I like quirky things too, which I think Uniqlo quite understands.”
Watch the models prepare for the shoot, then see a first look at some of the covetable pieces on offer – from button-through cropped jumpsuits and spring-like skater skirts to slouchy vests featuring playful cat motifs and floral-printed scarves. The collection launches in stores on March 21.
“I loved working with Uniqlo, I find lots of smiling faces, which is very pleasant,” she said. “We have a language actually that relates to each other and that’s been a real pleasure.”
Who can forget how captivating Tilda Swinton was portraying an androgynous nobleman roaming through a castle in the 1992 film “Orlando”? Certainly not Karl Lagerfeld, who cast the Oscar-winning actress in Chanel’s advertising campaign for the Paris-Edinburgh collection, the luxury métiers d’art range of pre-fall ready-to-wear paraded last December at Linlithgow Palace. The ads are slated to break in June magazines.
Lagerfeld first photographed Swinton around the time of “Orlando,” and reunited with her for the shoot earlier this month in the Château d’Ecouen, a castle from the Renaissance period located near Chantilly, France. (He also shot Swinton for “The Little Black Jacket,” a book and exhibition slated to hit Milan’s Rotonda di Via Besana from April 6 to 20.)
While her Scottish nationality matches the collection’s inspiration, Swinton is also “a modern woman, a timeless icon of elegance,” Lagerfeld said.
If you follow the fashion adventures of Kate Middleton, and we know that you do (oh yes, we do!) then you’ll want to tune in to this blog post. Especially if you’re pregnant. Well, actually only if you’re pregnant. Apologies to everyone else!
The blue Issa dress which was made famous by the Duchess of Cambridge at the announcement of her engagement to Prince William has been reinterpreted for the mothers-to-be out there. Issa has figured out another way to capitalise on its best-selling wrap around dress by re-releasing the dress in maternity sizes. Now that’s what you call some very clever marketing.
Sold via Blossom Mother and Child, the Issa classic silk wrap dress in indigo blue is available for £522 online. Of course we all know how much the original version of this dress flew off the racks following Kate and Wills’ engagement announcement. Then there were the copycat versions. But we promise this is the real deal, so much so that it might just be worth getting pregnant over. Just kidding!
If you’re on the hunt for some Kate-inspired maternity wear that is a little more budget-friendly then perhaps some Gap jeggings might interest you? The Duchess was spotted just last weekend eyeing up a pair as she shopped along the Kings Road in Chelsea. Sources claim she took a keen interest in the jeggings because she likes “very skinny jeans,” but in the end decided not to purchase a pair.
When you are pregnant, just getting dressed every day can be a struggle. Add to that getting dressed for work every day, or any kind of special event and you can feel totally and completely overwhelmed with the lack of fashionable options out there.
